Air Bubbles in a Syringe: How to Remove Them

Why bubbles happen, the five-step fix that puts the extra back in the vial, and the tiny one you should stop chasing.

Air in a syringe drawn from a vial is not dangerous under the skin in the amounts you will ever see; a few tiny bubbles are the same air that is already in the tissue. The real problem is measurement: a bubble takes up space on the scale, so a draw with a bubble in it is short by the size of the bubble. Here is how to get a clean draw.

Why bubbles happen

  • Drawing too fast. The plunger pulls harder than the liquid can follow, and air comes out of solution or leaks past the needle hub.
  • The needle tip left the liquid. Tilt the vial so the liquid pools at the stopper and keep the bevel under the surface.
  • Not putting air in first. Drawing from a vacuum-sealed vial without adding air first makes the draw fight the vacuum; push a syringe of air in equal to what you will draw out.
  • Foam from shaking. Foam is thousands of bubbles. Swirl, never shake; see the mixing guide.

The fix, in order

  1. Draw a little more than you need.
  2. Needle still in the vial, turn the whole thing so the vial is above the syringe and the needle points up.
  3. Flick the barrel with a fingernail. Bubbles rise to the needle end.
  4. Push the plunger gently until the bubble is gone and the liquid sits exactly on your line. The extra goes back into the vial, not into the air.
  5. Check the line once more with the syringe at eye level. A magnifier or a lamp makes the small barrels readable.

The tiny bubble that will not move

A pinhead bubble stuck to the plunger tip is a fraction of a unit and not worth chasing. If you have flicked it three times, stop; drawing and pushing repeatedly does more harm to your measurement than the bubble does.

Bubbles that come back every time

A loose needle on a slip-tip syringe lets air in past the hub; twist a luer-lock needle on properly, or use a fixed-needle insulin syringe. A cracked hub does the same; bin it.
