How long supplies last, and how to tell when they're done

Supplies expire three different ways. The printed date is only one of them.

Supplies expire in three different ways, and people usually only think about the first one.

  • The printed expiry date on sterile goods — syringes, needles, alcohol pads, gauze, filters. That's the date the manufacturer guarantees the sterile barrier, not the date the plastic stops working. Past it, the guarantee is gone.
  • The clock that starts when a seal is broken. Bacteriostatic water is the classic: the preservative is what makes an opened bottle usable for roughly 28 days rather than one sitting. Plain sterile water and plain saline have no preservative, so they're intended to be used once and discarded.
  • Damage that ignores dates entirely. A wrapper that has split, a needle cap that fell off in a bag, a pad that's dried out, gauze that got damp, a stopper someone touched. None of that has a date on it; it's simply finished.

How to keep track without thinking about it. Write the date on a vial the moment you open it — a waterproof label costs pennies and settles every future argument with yourself. Store boxes so the oldest is at the front. And when you genuinely can't remember whether something was opened or swabbed, treat it as used: a fresh syringe is cheap, and the alternative isn't.

Where the "28 days" number actually comes from

You'll see 28 days repeated everywhere as though it were a universal expiry for anything mixed. It isn't, and the confusion is worth clearing up because it comes from mixing two different clocks:

  • 28 days is a property of bacteriostatic water. The benzyl alcohol in it holds bacterial growth down for roughly that long after the stopper is first punctured. That's a statement about the water — it's the same 28 days whatever you dissolve in it, and it's why plain sterile water, with no preservative, gets used once instead.
  • How long the substance itself stays good is a completely separate question, decided by what it is and how it's stored. It can be shorter than 28 days or longer. Nothing about the water tells you this, and neither does this page.

So "it's been 28 days" answers the preservative question and only the preservative question. Labelled products vary widely — some say seven days after mixing, others fourteen or thirty — and the label always wins over the folk number.

What we can't tell you. How long a mixed product stays good is a property of that product, not of the water or the vial — it's on the labelling that came with it, and it's a question for the clinician or pharmacist who supplied it. Anything on the internet quoting a single number for "peptides" is guessing, and that includes anything quoting 28 days.
